Super Bad Sunday: <br>Page McConnell

Sun, 2010-05-09 16:08
IVORY TICKLER EXTRAORDINAIRE!!!

Last week JamBase's weekend triple shot honored Widespread's Jimmy Herring, this week's tip o' the hat to a shred-tastic player goes to Phish's keyboard maestro Page McConnell. Since most readers are familiar with his sleight of hand in Phish, we're offering up a few tastes of what he can do with other musicians (okay, we let Trey join in on one, but who could begrudge Big Red?). Enjoy!

This is a wonderful, sinewy beast. For those wishing to take the full ride, here's parts Two, Three and Four. McConnell's playing is truly sublime on this piece.

This two-part clip features Page jamming with drummer Roy Haynes, saxophonist James Carter, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and bassist Christian McBride on Phish's "Cars Trucks Buses."

Saturday Eye Candy: The Yardbirds

Sat, 2010-05-08 14:08
PERHAPS THE MOST UNDERRATED BRITISH INVASION BAND OF THEM ALL!

While the guitarists in the 1960s incarnations of The Yardbirds get the lion's share of historical recognition - easy to understand when one band helps launch the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page - but today we salute co-founder and original bassist Paul Samwell-Smith, who turns 67 today. A noteworthy music producer since he left the band in 1966, Samwell-Smith helped forge one of the most original, influential group sounds to emerge from the 1960s and played a key role in re-popularizing the blues with young people around the globe.

Though often a quite hard-edged group, The Yardbirds had a way with pop hooks, particularly this continuing radio staple.

Clapton was always pretty damn good, eh?

The Yardbirds were at the epicenter of pop culture in the '60s, which score them strange spotlights like this scene from Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up where they play "Stroll On."

In many ways, this band made the blues hip to folks who might have never encountered libidinous gems like "I'm A Man" without them.

A taste of Page in his first full flowering.

And we end with an indestructible bit of rock rightness. It is to be hoped that guitarists will continue to mine this one forever more.

My Morning Jacket | 04.30 | North Carolina

Fri, 2010-05-07 20:09
Words & Images by: Nick Todaro

My Morning Jacket :: 04.30.10 :: Koka Booth Amphitheatre :: Cary, NC

MMJ :: 04.30 :: North Carolina It was four songs into My Morning Jacket's first North Carolina set in three years that Jim James demonstrated how charismatic of a guy he actually is. Drunken concertgoers had been pelting the band with glow sticks following an explosion of them during "Gideon." Relentlessly, a few bumptious audience members decided to make the band members' faces targets for the plastic luminaries. Rather than acting annoyed or frustrated by the behavior, Mr. James took it in stride by picking up an orange one he had managed to dodge and placing it in his mouth. As the band roared into "Off The Record," James continued gnawing on the stick as if he were a dog chewing his favorite bone.

For the group's show at Cary's beautiful Koka Booth Amphitheatre, this incident summed up the theme of the night: try to make a bad situation enjoyable. Neither Jacket or the Preservation Hall Jazz Band contributed to the atypical circumstances surrounding the show, it was completely out of their hands. As a matter of fact, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, who went on just before sundown and had Jim James join them onstage for two songs, had spirits high throughout their signature performance of NOLA classics. Unfortunately, both the sound quality and the crowd atmosphere seemed to have been in the gutter on what could have been a monumental My Morning Jacket show.

A complaint about this particular venue frequently voiced within the Triangle music scene is that the sound is way too low during performances. This is mostly due to the amphitheatre park being surrounded by neighborhoods that like to complain. Being third row at a concert should mean that you're engulfed in a sea of sound, not struggling to hear the lyrics to your favorite song. Working against this was also the rowdy, talkative crowd. Packs of overly intoxicated - and most likely fraternity - "bros" made the pit situation even worse by persistently shoving and taunting fans that would not allow them closer access to the stage. Constantly, threats of violence echoed out down in the pit as if it were a battle between Jacket fans and the kids treating the experience as a keg party.

If any of these conditions affected My Morning Jacket, there was no way of telling. The setlist featured a number of specialties that had some fans overwhelmed. Following the opener, "Tonight I Want To Celebrate With You," twilight had struck the grounds, providing the perfect scenic conditions for a spine tingling "At Dawn." With twinkling specks of light reflecting off the lake positioned to the left side of the venue, the song had a genuine feel to it while acting as a gift to the folks hoping to hear anything off of At Dawn.

Watching Jim James' onstage antics also helped make up for the horrible atmosphere. Sporting a gun holster with a toy revolver and a Nintendo Duck Hunt gun inside, Jim showed off his slinging capabilities during "What A Wonderful Man" and "Touch Me Pt. 2." "Wordless Chorus" further displayed James' playful nature with the singer donning a cap and joyfully posing as a superhero. Remarkably, none of this distracts the rest of the musicians in the group. Bo Koster, Patrick Hallahan and Tom Blankenship all seemed to be feeding off the vibes James created throughout the night by gradually increasing the intensity of their playing.

Guitarist Carl Broemel was notably front and center for a good portion of the show, too. Between his feverish guitar solo on "Steam Engine" and dulcet display of saxophone playing on "Dondante," he had the chance to sing lead vocals on a new track, "Carried Away." Premiering at the band's recent Nashville stop, the tune finds MMJ going back to their It Still Moves days with a twangy, Southern feel.

Another highlight of the evening was the encore portion accented by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. For the second time this tour, the group busted out "Dancefloors" with the boys from NOLA backing them up. Having this and "Move On Up" - a Curtis Mayfield cover that premiered as the opener to MMJ's New Year's Eve show at Madison Square Garden in 2008 - being played at a regular Jacket stop felt absolutely sensational. With any luck, this tour will be the first in a long history of collaborations between the two ensembles.

As the saying goes, if you don't like something change it; and if you can't change it, change the way you think about it. In this case, the show should be remembered for the consequential value of premier musicianship by one of America's best live bands. No matter how obnoxious some spectators may have been, they can never take that away from My Morning Jacket.

JamBase Questionnaire: Jeff Austin

Fri, 2010-05-07 19:35
Welcome back to JamBase's regular feature where we put a baker's dozen of probing, wide-ranging questions to the bright lights in the jam scene (and beyond) in order to expose juicy tidbits about their musical minds. Last week we heard from John Butler and upcoming weeks will include insights from Trampled By Turtles, Cornmeal and more!

Jeff Austin by Tobin Voggesser Hair flying, sweat pouring off of him, fingers a happy blur, Jeff Austin is a sight and a half. He's also a surefire catalyst to anybody onstage with him. Some players excel in the role of trickster and instigator, and Austin exudes a heady musk full of mischief and in-the-moment jubilation that makes nostrils flare. He is a smile (or salty tear) transmogrified into musical notes. There's no doubting his sincerity or passion - it vibrates in every fiber of his being and presence. In his long-standing role in Yonder Mountain String Band he is the ringmaster for their idiosyncratic circus that reminds us of the vaudeville and traveling show roots of their big string thing. As a guest with myriad other bands, he's a free spirit that frees up others. And the boy can play a pretty dang good mandolin on top of everything else.

His new project is 30db, a spirited, crazy charming collaboration with Umphrey's McGee singer-guitarist Brendan Bayliss. Their debut studio effort, One Man Show, arrives May 11 on SCI Fidelity. It's a swell, press-repeat kind of rock affair that wraps a fine pop streak with the vibe of vintage Poco, The Byrds and other folk-tinged, vinyl-era rock combos, giving one the sense 30db is the 21st century answer to Loggins & Messina, except their mamas CAN dance to their rock 'n' roll. This pairing is melodically ripe and filled with thoughtful, catchy verses that stick around after the music stops. 30db begins their first tour tonight at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, WI. Then it's on to Chicago, Boulder, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland and an appearance at Summer Camp 2010. Find full 30db tour dates here. Joining Austin and Bayliss for these shows is the stellar assemblage of Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars, Hill Country Revue), Eric Thorin and Nick Forster.

(Dennis Cook)

Here's what Austin had to say to our inquiries.

1. Great music rarely happens without…
Listening. It's amazing how many great collaborations go to shit when no one is listening.

2. The first album I bought was…
I'm pretty sure it was Freeze Frame by the J Geils Band…vinyl, of course. I was pretty damn young. The one that made the most impact was American Beauty by the Grateful Dead. Big life changer, right there.

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig was…
The Devil You Know by Todd Snider. Every damn track made me pull the car over and just rock out for a bit. Best album in the last ten years as far as I'm concerned.

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to be…
What I am now, a full time musician. The path has been a little different, but I've known what I've wanted to do with my life since I was very, very young. I'm really glad I have a mom that always encouraged me and let me follow my dreams.

5. My favorite sort of gig is…
Packed to the rafters...50,000 folks at a festival like Bonnaroo or Rothbury…Telluride Bluegrass Fest in front of 10,000 people is the best gig to play all year...and Red Rocks...just mind-blowing.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me is…
I cannot get you Telluride Phish tickets. No, really, stop asking me, please

7. I love the sound of…
My house when it's quiet. When my girlfriend and the dog and cats are sleeping, the silence is really quite beautiful.

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic as…
Demon Days by Gorillaz. Fucking rock show from top to bottom.

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was at…
McMahon's Steakhouse in Arizona. It was my birthday and we ate for hours; finished the meal with a magnum of Nicholas Feuillatte 1999 champagne. Pretty hard to beat that one.

10. I always find the coolest audiences in…
Wherever folks are all there for the same reason and the energy is really flowing, be it 100 or 20,000 folks. When a crowd is all there for the same reason it just takes on a life of it's own.

11. The worst habit I've picked up being on the road all the time is…
The ability to sleep until 3p.m. That's a tough thing to shake off when you get back home.

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
The Beatles, because they are just the best.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw was…
The international space station flying over the bowl at Horning's Hideout at String Summit 2009. Folks thought I was crazy making them all look up. But, when that sucker flew over, three thousand faces all turned skyward, staring at an object floating thousands of miles up in space - and realizing there were humans in that machine looking right back at us. Everything stopped for this amazing moment...and the roar after it passed from view was just incredible. Really a moment I'll never forget.

Jane's Addiction: <br>Cinco de Mayo Show

Fri, 2010-05-07 16:54
DUFF'S FULL SHOW DEBUT

Surrounded by piñatas, sombreros and green, white and red flags in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, Jane's Addiction threw a fiesta on Wednesday at the intimate Bardot in Hollywood, where 150 or so fans and friends squeezed together to experience the very first show by lead singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins with new member, bassist Duff McKagan (Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses).

The band played a seven-song set that marked the debut of a new song, "Soulmate," mixed in with the staples like "Stop," "Mountain Song," "Had a Dad," "Whores," "Ain't No Right" and "Ocean Size." Cheering the band on were actors Joaquin Phoenix and Danny and Chris Masterson, as well as pro-skater Danny Way, along with musician friends Tom Morello, Matt Sorum, Gilby Clarke and Fishbone's Chris Dowd.

Writing at Rollingstone.com (5/6/10), Steve Appleford said: "Onstage with Jane's in 2010, McKagan set a thick, watery bassline against Navarro's speedy solo on 'Whores' (from 1987), and it sounded like a collaboration built to last." Steve Baltin at AOL's Spinner.com (5/6/10) noted: "Musically, McKagan, who is an old friend of the band and came from the same L.A. scene, slid in to the foursome as smoothly as 'Soulmate' made its way into the set last night." Liam Gowing at Spin.com (5/6/10) added the evening was "…a chance to see the alternative rock gods play a room no bigger than a volleyball court" and took note of the "mesmerized crowd."

Jane's Addiction is now continuing to write for their next album, tentatively due out in the winter of 2011 on Capitol and to be supported by a worldwide concert tour.

For a taste of what the full album holds, the band is offering a FREE MP3 download of the song "Perfect Lover" available for download HERE.

One of reggae's founding fathers, Toots Hibbert has been one of the leading figures for over four decades. And on Flip & Twist, Toots delves into his soul and R&B influences, creating a record that's as much Kingston, Jamaica as it is 1960s Detroit. The album's opener "Almighty Way," is a modern day gospel-soul classic. "Fool For You" finds Toots at his most vulnerable, creating a soulful ballad a la The Four Tops. Toots also tackles Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground," turning the song into a contemporary reggae classic. And on "Jungle" and "Maybe Yow" Toots delves into dance music, building catchy melodies catchy hip-hop beats.

Yo La Tengo: From Monk to the Mets

Thu, 2010-05-06 19:44
By: Ron Hart

Yo La Tengo Yo La Tengo of Hoboken, NJ, formed 25 years ago when New York Rocker scribe and local soundman Ira Kaplan met artist Georgia Hubley, daughter of legendary Disney animator John Hubley, and the two bonded over records and the New York Mets. Since then, alongside longtime bassist James McNew, the band has established themselves as one of the truly great American rock bands in modern times, with a sage-like knowledge of pop history and ability to collaborate with just about anyone under the sun, be it El-P of Company Flow, NYC jazz greats Other Dimensions in Music or Howard Kaylan of The Turtles.

2009 saw the trio release Popular Songs, their 12th album and most adventurous since 2000's masterful And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. JamBase had the privilege of catching up with Ira Kaplan while Yo La were on a brief trip back home in Hoboken. Our conversation touched on TV series Monk, Spinal Tap, taking a hiatus from the band's long-running tradition of playing Maxwell's during the week of Hanukkah, bootlegging, and the razing of Shea Stadium, among other topics.

JamBase: While you were in Europe over the holiday season, I read on your blog that you wound up watching Monk in the ancestral home of Hans Christian Andersen.

Ira Kaplan: [Laughs] Yeah, we were in Copenhagen and Monk came on in the middle of the night. It was like a postcard from home.

JamBase: Was he just as neurotic in Denmark as he is in the U.S.?

Ira Kaplan: [Laughs] You know, when you're traveling, he seems to make perfect sense. I mean, we already like that show, but we've had experiences with things you would never watch anywhere else. It's like, "Oh look, they're speaking English. I would love to watch Ally McBeal."

Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby opened for you guys in Europe. How was it touring with Eric?

We've known Eric for a couple of years now, and he's nothing but a prince to us.

You guys cast such a wide net on who you all work with. I always go back to your Hanukkah shows at Maxwell's and all the different people who jump onstage with you.

Well, that's how we met Eric. Eric came to one of the shows and we did some stuff together.

Were you guys bummed that you couldn't do the Maxwell's run this past holiday season?

Well, a little bit, but only a little. We know it was the right decision, so why focus on that aspect of it? We've had a great year, so we just enjoy the fact that we've been too busy to do this other thing that under other circumstances would have been ready.

When did you start those Hanukkah shows?

Yo La Tengo :: March, 2010 :: Tel Aviv by Goni Riskin 2001. For a couple of years, the notion of having some kind of holiday party where we would maybe just play free for our friends seemed like a good idea. We just wanted to do some kind of commemorative something-or-other. And then it would come around we'd be like, "Yeah, this is exactly what the world needs, another Christmas party [laughs]." So, the idea would just go by the wayside. Then one year, not really as a joke but with some element of humorousness, I said, "Oh, why don't we play all eight nights of Hanukkah." And I think it seemed audacious to play eight nights in a row. But it just had such a good combination of funny and... what was that Spinal Tap line?

Oh man, it's been a while.

I just had to look up that line: "The fine line between clever and stupid." That's what I thought we were doing, combining clever and stupid [laughs].

I actually heard a couple of your shows on NYCTaper.com, who I believe has consent to tape your shows?

Yeeaaaah.

Are you cool with it?

Well, you know it's a funny thing. Like a lot of things in this world, I am of two minds about it. I feel like people are gonna do stuff like that anyway and when these things are kinda out there, it means they're not.... well, now this is a bit different with the Internet. But back before the Internet, we were allowing people to do that, because I didn't really want people buying them or selling them. You go into these stores and see bootlegs that are like really expensive. So I thought, before it becomes this really rare commodity, you're not gonna stop it from being done. So yeah, we just focus on that aspect of it and if people are interested [in taping us], that's flattering. To be perfectly honest, I like to play shows as if no one will ever hear it again, and the fact that people do hear them again is a mixed blessing [laughs].

I hear what you are saying.

It's just kinda the magic of the moment. You make records to be listened to again and again and you play live to try for something more ephemeral. But that's just one side of it. The other side of it is that it's certainly flattering that people care.

Have you guys ever thought about putting out an official live album?

Yo La Tengo We've talked about it here and there among different things. One of the things is that it's just not that much fun to work on, but we'll see what happens. [Writer's note: There is one great live document of Yo La Tengo officially available, and that's their compilation of performances during their yearly cover-thon for the WFMU pledge drive, where the band will play anything the callers request on the spot, which the group sells on their website].

I noticed on Popular Songs you play a lot more keyboards than usual.

Yeah, I guess that's true [laughs]. There's piano and a bunch of organs.

There's that one performance of you guys playing the new album's first track "Here to Fall" on a rooftop and you looked like you were having a good time with all the effects pedals hooked up to your Wurlitzer.

When we first wrote that song, I was playing it on piano. And I'm almost sure it was James who suggested trying it on the Wurlitzer and plugging it into a fuzzbox and then the wah-wah pedal. I think most of that stuff came from James. It definitely had a sound unlike any other one. We were certainly grabbed by it. And then a couple of other things led to trying out a few of the other sounds at the beginning. We were working on trial and error.

You also worked with Cadet Records composer/arranger Richard Evans. How did you hook up with him to do the strings on "If It's True"?

We had the idea of trying to find an old school string arranger and he was number one on our want list. James just went on the Internet and managed to search him and find out that he's teaching in Berklee [College of Music] up in Boston. He just sent him a cold email, and next thing you knew he was hearing from Richard Evans.

It's pretty extraordinary how accessible some people are online. I just sent Doug Yule an email about an interview and he got right back to me.

Oh yeah, how's he doin'?

He does an old-timey band up in Seattle called RedDog. He still has that great voice. Moe Tucker [Velvet Underground] had a very distinct voice as well, and I definitely hear a little of her in Georgia's singing, in a way.

Yeah, I love Moe's singing and I've heard that myself [in Georgia's singing]. I've read other people make that same observation.

Georgia didn't start singing until Fakebook [1990], if I'm not mistaken.

Yo La Tengo by Steve Gullick Pretty much. She sang the tiniest bit before that but she was extremely, extremely reluctant to sing. It was a pretty slow process. She sings on the records a little bit prior to Fakebook, but she certainly never sang a lead vocal until Fakebook.

Did you always know she had such a lovely voice?

Oh yeah, yeah [laughs]. I always encouraged her to sing.

Speaking of Fakebook, how did you guys come up with the concept of your covers album as the Condo Fucks, Fuckbook?

The name is an old name in our world. Even at the time, we forgot how old it is. We were referencing the inner sleeve to the [vinyl version of] I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One [1997]. We did kind of a old fashioned homage to old label inner sleeves in which different records on the label would be highlighted. So, we did our own where we made one for Matador; we made up a bunch of records and the Condo Fucks was one of them. And at the time, and that's what we were remembering, but it's only occurred to us in talking about it that Georgia did the cover art for a Homestead compilation called Human Music that we appear on. And when she was doing a mock-up of it, she didn't know who was going to be on the record, but in the space where she knew the groups would be listed she was writing in band names just to get a feel for how it would look, and one of the names she wrote was the Condo Fucks. So, she came up with that name. I don't remember what year that was but a long time ago, and we just dredged it back up for I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One.

Well, it certainly is a name for its time, especially given the gentrification of certain parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn over the years.

Well, I'm sure she was referencing more about Hoboken, which hits a little closer to home.

When did you guys first perform as Yo La Tengo?

It was at Maxwell's for a party with Antietam. Antietam's second show, our first.

How many people showed up?

Well, it felt like a million [laughs]. Too many, it was terrifying.

I'm sure after a few beers it got more fun.

I think after a few years, it got a little more fun [laughs]. Something we learned pretty quickly was that you think it's gonna be easy to perform to your friends but there's actually no harder audience. I don't necessarily mean that they're tough on you, but it's just harder to play for people you know. Playing for strangers is much easier [laughs].

Have you been to Citifield yet?

I have not. I went to one Mets game last year. I drove down to Philadelphia to spend a couple of days there. The Philadelphia ICA had an exhibit of Sun Ra memorabilia, so I drove down and went to that and went to a Mets-Phillies game.

Were you sad to see Shea go?

You know, I was and I wasn't. It wasn't a very good place to see a game. But at the same time, part of your life gets knocked down with it. But clearly I was under no illusions about its attributes as a ballpark.

Jose Gonzalez's Rock Band<BR> Junip Confirms Tour Dates

Fri, 2010-04-30 20:04
JOSE GONZALEZ-FRONTED ROCK BAND SET TO RELEASE RECORDS AND TOUR
NEW SONG AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD

Junip Junip was formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the late '90s by Jose Gonzalez (guitar, vocals), Elias Araya (drums) and Tobias Winterkorn (organ, moog). Their first 7" came out in 2000 and they self-released the Black Refuge EP in 2006. RCRDLBL distributed the single "Chickens/Azaleadalen" in 2009. Junip has periodically gathered together and recorded when schedules permitted, but this is the first time the members will focus exclusively on the band. An EP and full-length will be released in 2010 with Mute in the U.S. and Canada, City Slang in Europe, Shock in Australia and Ultra-Vybe in Japan. Global touring will commence this spring. A short American tour has been confirmed to start on June 8 in Brooklyn, NY, ending in Seattle on June 19. The touring band will add two members.

Says Gonzalez about the band: "We are really happy to have had the time to write and record these songs and now are excited to have the opportunity to play them live."

Junip is now offering a first listen to their new music with a free download of the song "Rope and Summit" here.

Their sound can be familiar to those who have listened to Gonzalez's critically acclaimed records, but added to the mix on top of his nylon stringed guitar and distinctive voice are organs, synths and drums. The songs are often dynamic, melodic and shadowy.

Tour dates are available below.
